3 Tier Birthday Cake

Sixteen Year, Birthday cakes makes me a bit jittery! You might wonder why? To me this event is very similar to a bride getting married. Parents normally spend lots of money on their 16 year old and even the cakes have to be exactly the way they want it.

Now, I am not a professional baker, I am a hobbyist (my own version for someone doing cake decorating purely for the passion of decorating) so for me it becomes scary if I do not know whether I will be up to the task in creating their dream 16th birthday cake.

When I started planning this cake, I first thought of using my Cricut Cake Machine as it is perfect for cutting out flowers flawlessly, but it is limited to only the cartridges you have. You can't just buy extra cartridges unless you are married to a millionaire. So, I did have a few flowers, but not the ones that my client was looking for.

If you are not in the cake industry you probably wonder how we get these flowers to be so thin and if we use molds. In this case no molds only patience a scalpel and paper. Some bakers use baking paper to cut out the shapes they are going to use as it will last longer and you can keep it as it does not get messy like paper does in time.

The 16th Birthday Cake content: 6 Vanilla Chiffon Cakes. Cutting flowers approximately 2 hours.
The client wanted the brick look around the cake, which I would've done differently, but your client is always right and she loved it, and that is all that is important!

Wedding Cake

When my client requested red with turquoise wedding cake, I thought it will look so strange. Well, it is still not what I would have chosen for myself, but it came out great.

The flowers I made well in advance to be sure that they are nice and dry. Letters on top was made with Cricut Cake machine (the other love of my life). Inside of wedding cake.......

Top Tier - White Milk Chocolate
Middle Tier - Chocolate Ganache
Bottom Tier - Vanilla Magic

Fondant Flowers will soon be available if you would like to decorate your own cake. Just make sure you like my page to get the updates.

Baptism Cake

Blue and White Baptism Cake was lots of fun to make. Anything where I can create something out of fondant is exciting. I just love the way fondant feels and it is my favorite medium to work with purely because you can fix mistakes so easily.

The Baptism cake was an Amarula chocolate cake. The bible on top made with fondant, painted with silver (pages). The crosses hand-made template. The lettering done with my Cricut Cake. Can't live without this piece of equipment as the lettering are just gorgeous!

Cake decorators sometimes have to be very creative if they do not have all the tools the professionals have to create an awesome cake.

Again, I only thrive to make sure my clients are happy with my work.

Music Cake

A music cake that was so much fun making it, while listening to great tracks. The best of both worlds!

My client emailed me a pic of a cake looking like this one. Immediately I knew this is Michael Jackson party. Very excited I started the planning.

The music notes took sooooo much time, as again, I do not have molds, that day I wished I had as I got soooo frustrated to get it perfect.

The first step is to download notes from the internet. Draw them on paper/wax paper and cut them out. You then need to make sure your fondant is not too hard or too soft as it plays a very big part. If it is too soft, it will stretch/distort your image. If it is to hard, it tends to make rough edges.

The notes around the Music Cake was difficult as I had no plan. I had to improvise as I went along. Was not perfect for my eyes, but the client thought it looked great.

The same applies for the flat figurine on the top which turn out to be a nightmare when the client collected. As we load it in her car, I by mistake bumped it and the hand broke off. What a disaster, I tries to fix the Music Cake quickly but did not succeed.

Lucky for me, the party was only the next day and I could make a brand new one. It cost me more fondant, tylose powder to make it harder quicker and the fridge, but all was perfect and ready for the party.

Now, I always make two of an item that I think can possible break!

16th Birthday Cake Topsy Turvy

Yes, another 16th Birthday Cake, but this one was beyond fun to make.

I could do with this one just what I like as long as it was a Topsy Turvy Cake.

I used bold colors that I love with spirals, strings, balls and flowers that was all hand made.

I am beyond satisfies with this one and can really say that it was beautiful!

The strings were wrapped around a kebab stick and dried to give that effect.
The flowers was done one section at a time in a small pudding bowl with lots of cotton between the petals to give that effect.

Flowers will soon be up for sale/order early in 2015.

Mickey and Minnie Cakes

Mickey and Minnie cakes are not just fun to make, but easier than you think.

All you need to do is to find a black and white image on the internet. Print the desired size as per your cake. Make sure you print more than one copy as you need to use the one for the background and one for the front of the face that you will need to cut out. Every detail separate.

The best is to print and then redraw it on wax/baking paper so that you can use it the next time.Mickey and Minnie cakes are popular and will never go out of fashion.

Use the background image to carve your cake first and then use it again after you rolled out your black fondant! The same applies for the rest.

Lettering was done with cookie cutters - I honestly dislike using them and prefer my Cricut Cake Machine, but sometimes the space is just limited and they will have to do!

Frozen Cake

The world is crazy at the moment. All the girls just want a Frozen Party with everything Frozen!

I have to admit, making Olaf and the rest of the cake was so much fun. I had to make use of my own templates that I've create for the covering part, but the rest are all hand made with love.

Snowflakes are obviously cutters.

Nice Frozen Cake, happy girly.

Safari Cake

Ohhhh, I love this cake so much that it was difficult to let go.

When my client asked for a Safari Cake, I could hardly contain myself. If I had freedom to create, I would've added lots and lots more animals, but I understand that budget plays a big role for my client too and I can't just make everything for free, which I sometimes do!

Everything on this cake is hand crafted fondant, except for the lettering that was done by my beloved Cricut Machine. I should've covered the cake board with stripes or something, it would've made the Safari Cake more appealing, but that is a whole lot of fondant that gets wasted.

Spiderman Cake

There is no words to describe how I feel about kids cakes. They are so much more fun to make than the normal Adult Cake.

This Spiderman cake was a time killer but so exciting to make.  The face of Spiderman was done after printing a template of the internet. Same applies to the letters. It took ages to make them perfect!

The other time consuming item was the buildings around the cake. Thinking back now, I could've used my Cricut Cake for them too!

I'm soon going to release a product on my page with a whole set of Spiderman Items that can be used for Cake Decorating. Coming early 2015.

Frozen Cake

I have  made lots of Frozen Cakes, just not add them to my blog, but out of all of them this one is the best, purely because it is so very white. It just looks different.

The two girls are the only items that are not hand made. They are infinity toys and looked great on the cake. I sometimes ask my client if they rather not want to buy the figurines, especially if they have a specific look, as it works out cheaper for them as for me making them and charging them for something that will be eaten. At least after the Frozen Cake is eaten, the girl will still have the toys!

Corset and Jeans Cake

Where do I begin....

I had no idea how I'm going to do this one! Especially covering the top cake as it was extra large and if you do not know how to work with fondant, then you will be up for a challenge with fondant stretching or cracking afterwards.

The cowgirl hat on top was hand made with fondant, but it is only the outer shell and not heavy at all. I normally use a mold that I've made myself. It took awhile to get the hat like that so patience is a good idea when you start with that.

The rest of the Corset and Jeans Cake was done as I went along. Having a few cake decorating tools is definitely a plus!

Alice in Wonderland Cake

The Alice and Wonderland Cake was quick to make even if it looks like lots of detail.

Ribbon cutter was used for stripes. Template from internet for the cats face and that is basically it.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cake

One of my most favorite cakes I've ever made!

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle equals lots of time making it, but so worth it! Even the planning was fantastic.

Starting from the top. Letters taken from internet, made my own template.
Lid of Sewerage. Thin fondant rolled out with pasta machine and dried properly.
TMNT's heads and arms made and dried seperately.
Buildings on side of bottom tier done as I made the cake.
The pizza board done well in advance.
Lettering - Cricut Cake Machine.

Wholaaahhh. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Cake! Awesomeness!

Animal Print Cake

My daughter wanted this cake! She loves Leopards and Tigers and all of the cat family!
